When Lake Lanier, outside of Atlanta, was formed in the 1950's, it covered lands previously inhabited by Cherokee and Mississippian Indians. Due to a prolonged drought, the lake has receded and artifacts from these inhabitants are re-emerging. Donna Mintz has incorporated these artifacts in a mixed media exhibition, which includes: an installation formed by 5000 shards of glass, and collaged paintings containing as many as 20 layers of paint, which refer to the archaeological process by which the artist found the artifacts. The exhibit is a monument to reclamation and transformation, and honors the beauty of lost things.
